QUESTIONS
• Are there literacy services available to help employers who have employees functioning at low skill levels? • Why is there a fee for these services? • What kinds of services are provided? • Where and when are the services offered? ANSWERS Q: Are there literacy services available to help employers who have employees functioning at low skill levels? A: Yes, most technical colleges offer Workplace Literacy services for a reasonable fee. For information about these services in Gwinnett County, contact Judie Plumb in the Adult Education Office at Gwinnett Tech. Return to TopQ: Why is there a fee for these services? A: Because federal funds used for adult education / adult literacy programs are intended for the general population and cannot be directed to benefit a for-profit company or corporation. Regular federally funded adult literacy services must provide access to the general public. Fee-based Workplace Literacy services are a contracted service, and are exempt from this requirement. Return to TopQ: What kinds of services are provided? Services include assessment of employee functioning levels, analysis of skills required to perform on the job, and design of instructional programs to raise employee skill levels to do their jobs well. Instruction may be in areas of adult reading, basic skills review, GED preparation, English as a Second Language, or specific remediation of basic academic skills to match a job requirement. Return to TopQ: Where and when are the services offered? The employer determines the best time and place for such services and works with the Workplace Literacy coordinator to schedule accordingly. Most employers provide space at the worksite and schedule their employees at the most convenient time before, during, or immediately following the work day.
